Get up close and personal with Alaska’s wildlife on an exciting Wildlife Sanctuary & Eagle Center tour! Known as America’s last frontier, Alaska possesses the United States’ largest national forest, Tongass National Forest, a region generally untouched by time and development and therefore a perfect rainforest refuge for native wildlife. Within its borders, plant and animal life has naturally flourished, allowing visitors to truly experience Alaskan wilderness and wildlife.

Your tour begins with a scenic drive out of Ketchikan along the coast of Revillagigedo Island, providing marvelous views of the Tongass Narrows and nearby Gravina Island as you make your way to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary. Once the hub of the Herring Bay Lumber Company and now a private 40 acre rainforest reserve in the forested mountains surrounding picturesque Herring Cove, the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary boasts a pristine natural environment that is home to a variety of quintessential Alaskan creatures including Sitka black tail deer, black bears, mink, and seals along with a variety of bird species attracted by the major salmon runs found in the cove.

Once at the sanctuary, your naturalist guide will lead you on foot through the forest trails, along the way detailing interesting facts about the striking flora and fauna around you. You’ll make your way to the sanctuary’s open estuary and its elevated boardwalk where you’ll follow along Eagle Creek, observing the forest, viewing the animals that come to feed on the salmon in the creek, and listening to the melodious calls of the birds in the trees. After your trek along the trails, you’ll be able to explore the historic buildings and machines of the former sawmill as well as observe aTsimshian totem pole park, home to an impressive 40 foot totem and 13 other poles all from one master carver. Visit the Alaska Raptor Center exhibit and have a chance to view and photograph bald eagles, America's national bird, up close. You will also have a time to shop for the perfect souvenir in the general store.
