What to Expect on a Hot Air Balloon Ride

The world beneath you transforms into a patchwork of vivid splendors. All at once, you feel the thrill of soaring high above the landscape and the calm of a soft breeze carrying you. A hot air balloon ride is peaceful, picturesque, and just a little hair-raising.

What’s the Experience Like?

The adventure often begins with helping during inflation. With the balloon envelope spread on the ground and the basket tipped on its side, a large fan blows cold air into the opening while the nylon fills and takes shape.

Next, the air is heated with a propane burner. The basket turns upright, passengers climb in, and the balloon gently lifts off.

What Does It Feel Like to Drift in a Hot Air Balloon?

The sensation is one of total weightlessness among the clouds. There are no windows—just open air and unobstructed views, perfect for photography.

Because the balloon moves with the wind rather than against it, there’s no turbulence. You may feel a slight breeze when changing altitude, but motion sickness is not a concern. Aside from occasional bursts from the burner, the experience is nearly silent.

What Does It Feel Like to Take Off and Land?

Takeoff is smooth and gradual, often surprising first-time flyers with how gentle it feels. Landings can include a few small bumps as the pilot guides the balloon down, and a ground crew is usually present to stabilize the basket.

How High Do Hot Air Balloons Fly?

While the highest recorded hot air balloon flight reached nearly 69,000 feet, recreational balloon rides typically fly between 1,000 and 3,000 feet. Some experiences may reach up to 5,000 feet.

When Do Hot Air Balloon Rides Take Place?

Most balloon rides take place at sunrise or sunset, when wind conditions are calm and lighting is ideal. Morning flights usually meet 30–60 minutes before sunrise, while sunset flights are often seasonal and weather dependent.

How Long Do Hot Air Balloon Rides Last?

The flight itself typically lasts about one hour. Including transportation, setup, and post-flight traditions like a champagne toast, the full experience usually lasts 3 to 4 hours.

How Many Passengers Fit in a Hot Air Balloon?

Larger baskets can accommodate 10–15 passengers while still allowing everyone room to enjoy the view. Private balloon rides are also available and are popular for couples, proposals, and special occasions.

How Do Hot Air Balloons Work?

Hot air ballooning dates back to 1782, when the Montgolfier brothers discovered that heated air rises. A modern balloon consists of an envelope, a basket (or gondola), and a propane burner.

The burner heats the air inside the envelope, causing it to expand and lift the balloon. Releasing warm air through a vent allows the balloon to descend. Pilots steer by adjusting altitude to catch different wind currents.

Are Hot Air Balloons Safe?

Hot air ballooning is considered one of the safest forms of aviation. Flights are operated by FAA-certified pilots, only occur in suitable weather, and include a full safety briefing before takeoff.
